Transactions 1/12-1/18

First things first: Suck it Patty! Oklahoma defeats Texas in the first major showdown of the UFL season.

Now on to business.
Guys, calm down. I swear I have thought this through. Before I get to the transaction contraversy, here are the transaction logistics. Every week I will create a post titled like this one. It is only to be used for noting transactions in the comments. For almost everything the first time stamp wins. In some very scpecial circumstances we can use a bottom up waiver order. I think the NCAA tournament and the cycling races are good candidates. I hesitate to use a waiver system beyond that, because 1) for routine transactions it is just unnecessary 2) more active participants should get this slight edge and 3) MOST IMPORTANT: A waiver system means I have to wade through back channel emails constantly AND I would constantly be accused of stealing someone's idea when I make a move ahead of them on the wire.

A transaction is a drop/add or a trade. (This week you can also place the shit storm of transaction debate in comments to this post.)

Now on to the contraversy: I have no problem locking Golfers before a golf tournament and tennis players before a tennis tournament and WBC and LLWS start at octofinals so I have no problem locking them at the start of the tournament. With ten units owned we are guaranteed at least a little head to head action. Other than that I think locking anything is unnecessary. Take for example the NCAA tournament. We could lock everyone into their two teams and that's it...but I think that is boring. It is also unneccessary. If your non-BCS basketball team loses in the first round and you pick up another one in the second round, odds are they are going to lose too. With no additional points. That is the nature of cinderellas in the tournament. However, with my system of no locks in the tournament we are guaranteed to have every team in the Final eight owned by someone in this league. That means four head to head matchups in that round followed by guaranteed head-to-head in the semi and the final. That's exciting. That is awesome for shit talking. That is like the fantasy football playoffs in March.

As for cycling, if you can't drop and add during the races, then one person will possibly get 25 points and the rest of the league will top out at 3 or 6. 25 for one of us is even very speculative. The "leader" of a team falls off his bike and is out of the race more often than he'll win a stage in a major race. I see each race more as a season unto itself than an individual game.

Give this a couple weeks, okay. The top ten units in most sports are now owned by someone in the league. Transactions are going to happen, but NFL Teams aren't like wide recievers, the talent pool is just not deep enough for the transactions to become burdensome.

  1. OK, I think I'm convinced on college basketball, though I think pickups should be frozen at the start of conference tournaments and start back up after Selection Sunday to give people credit for picking non-BCS tournament teams.

Locking the pro sports is unnecessary because all the decent playoff teams should be picked up prior to the playoffs anyway in each sport. The every stage idea for cycling has always been good.

However, the sport that needs to be locked is college football. Jumping from bowl team to bowl team would be pretty silly and the arbitrary nature of the scoring - did Buffalo really deserve post-New Years points this year for example - would be relatively easy to abuse.

  2. Alright, I'm convinced on the college football locking before the bowls. Jumping around from bowl team to bowl team hadn't occurred to me. I agree that those second teir post new year's bowls are odd, but who plays in them is pretty random so not much to be done about it other than maybe treat them as pre-new year's (although they feature non-bcs teams, so it is kind of like a bonus for picking good non-bcs teams).

Also, locking before conference tournaments in NCAA works for me.

  3. My thought is to have more lock ins than proposed by Lyons. I guess it does make for better competition if you can just keep switching your team in say, NCAA Tournament. But the reward should be picking the team BEFORE the Tourney. Someone should not be rewarded with points just because they happened to pick up the eventual winner in Round 3.

As for cycling, I also think you should lock in before the stage. So what if someone gets all the points. I do not want to be put at a disadvantage because i am not following the Giro de Italia stage by stage.

My proposal is to lock all the sports before the playoffs/tournament/bowls (and for cycling at the beginning). Otherwise, it is going to be too difficult to determine which you are locked in and which you aren't. Ineveitably, people will claim that it is unfair.

Those are my thoughts. If you choose to go another way, fine. But you definitely need to post the rules for each sport so there is no confusion.

  5. I'm open to your thoughts on the NCAA tournament, however, your argument that cycling should lock because, "I do not want to be put at a disadvantage because i am not following the Giro de Italia stage by stage" is totally without merit. The whole point of this is to be rewarded for paying attention.

I also think that everyone here is capable of handling different rules for different sports. I think a lot of your concern comes from the fact that you are still thinking of this as 16 sports all going at once. Right now there are 3 sports actively accumulating points. those will end and some others will start. The whole thing is pretty managable.

Back to the NCAA: I see your point about a scenario where the winner is picked in the 3rd round, however, the picker of that team already missed out on as many points as they stand to win (except for the points that only go to the champ.) I am curious what Brian thinks about all of this.
